“Sense the sky from a drop of water. Sense the mountain from a piece of stone.
Trace the roots of everything around us.”
[ Concept ] Memorize No.1 is a singular motif that captures the transition of natural materials into objects of human utility.
The work consists of a porcelain receptacle, reminiscent of a sarcophagus, containing porcelain crockery all of which is made from the same piece of kaolin. Also known as white china clay, kaolin is the primary ingredient for making porcelain. The outer shape of the receptacle reflects the original shape of the kaolin in its unadulterated state.
I am fascinated by the idea that all creation is rooted in an act of destruction. I see destruction and creation as being inseparable concepts. Destruction, however, is often overlooked or forgotten. With this piece, I am seeking to eliminate any perceived distance between the two concepts. The use of ubiquitous porcelain crockery places this piece firmly in the context of everyday consumerism.
[ Process ] After sourcing a piece of kaolin from a quarry outside of Prague, I preserved its natural shape by enveloping it in a plaster mold.
I then had the kaolin converted into porcelain clay and applied it to the mold in order to create a receptacle that is in effect a facsimile of the kaolin’s original form.
