A wall is a potent symbol of the communist era. During the early days of communism in Hungary, many of the rooms in this grand 19th-century residence had their doorways bricked up so the rooms could be converted into separate apartments. I removed these bricks and returned the doors to their original purpose. The bricks were retained and incorporated as an installation. The phrase ‘no brick left behind’ imbues in the bricks the status of a war veteran. The bricks have fallen but their service and role in history are acknowledged.
