A wall is a potent symbol of the communist era. During the early days of communism in Hungary, many of the rooms in this grand 19th-century residence had their doorways bricked up so the rooms could be converted into separate apartments. I removed these bricks and returned the doors to their original purpose. The bricks were retained and incorporated as an installation.
The ‘Cut here’ line gives the sense of an innocuous instruction and provides a playful counterpoint to the heavy symbolism of removing the wall.
